Kaleiçi is Antalya's old town, built around a small harbour that dates back to Roman times. Behind its city walls, narrow cobblestone streets wind between old Ottoman-era houses — many now restored as boutique hotels and guesthouses. It's compact and largely pedestrian, so the easiest way to think of it isn't street names but landmarks: once you've found the harbour, everything else in Kaleiçi is a short walk away.

What to see first

Hadrian's Gate, the Roman triumphal arch marking one of the old entrances to the city, is a natural starting point and one of Kaleiçi's most recognisable sights. From there, let the lanes pull you toward the old harbour — a small, sheltered bay lined with cafés and boats, with sea views that make it the natural gathering point of the old town and the usual starting point for boat trips along the coast. Nearby, the old clock tower marks another edge of the historic centre. Beyond the landmarks, Kaleiçi rewards wandering without a fixed plan — the lanes are short, the district is small, and it's difficult to get properly lost.

Where your transfer drops you

Kaleiçi's core is a pedestrian area — the narrow lanes weren't built for cars, let alone larger vehicles, so private transfers typically drop passengers at the edge of the old town rather than inside it. If your hotel is actually within Kaleiçi's walls, your driver will confirm the closest possible drop-off point in advance, so you know exactly where you're walking from with your luggage.

A simple first day

There's no need to over-plan your first day in Kaleiçi. Arrive, settle into your room, and let the jet lag pass before you do anything else. In the early evening, once the heat has eased, take a slow walk down to the harbour — this is when the old town is at its most atmospheric, with the light softening over the water and the streets filling with people out for the evening. From there, simply follow your appetite: Kaleiçi is full of places to eat within its old walls, so there's no wrong direction to wander in search of dinner.
